About Bheemunipatnam

Bheemunipatnam is a town in the neighborhood of Vishakapatnam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a municipality town and was merged with Greater Vishakapatnam Municipal Cooperation. Bheemunipatnam has co-ordinates 17.53N 83.26E. It has an average elevation of 170 feet.

History of Bheemunipatnam

The town of Bheemunipatnam has a lot of earlier and historical influence of Buddhism. There is the Buddha Statue at Bheemunipatnam Beach Road. The historical evidences go back to the 3rd century BCE on the hillock Pavurallakonda. This area was also known as Narsimhaswami konda locally. During earlier excavations by scientists, a Buddhist remains was found here along with Relic caskets. On this land, both the Buddhism Hinayana and Mahayana were propagated. The same spread to the far east lands from the port of River Gosthani.

The Dutch Influence

Bheemunipatnam was a strategic area because of its proximity to seaports like Vishakhapatnam. The Dutch had been one of the early colonial powers here and had called the area Bimilipatnan. Even today, you can see the remnants of the Dutch East India Company trading post along with one of the oldest Christian cemeteries on the coast. Back then, this town also had a currency mint.

East India Company

After the Dutch, it was the British East India Company that made Bheemunipatnam their main trading base on the eastern coast of India. This become a major port for operating passenger vessels to Madras and Calcutta during the British Raj. One of the historical monuments here is the big clock tower in the town that was built by British.

Tourism in Bheemunipatnam

As mentioned above, there are a lot of important places to see in this town. There is an old Church which goes back to 1850s called "The Red Church". You can also visit 'The Andhra Baptist' church that has a rich history of more than 130 years. Along with this, the popular lighthouse still exists and it dates back to 1868. It had been built during Dutch settlement and is situated on the shores of Bheemili Beach. There are also various Buddhist sites here to see including Bojjannakonda, Bavikonda, Lingalakonda, Pavurallakonda, Salihundam and Thotlakonda. If not anything hang out at the beach to enjoy a quite day.

Narasimha temple

Along with a strong Buddhist influence, there is also a Hindu temple located in this area that is dedicated to Lord Narasimha. It is situated on the eastern side of Pavurallakonda facing the sea. As per past records, the temple had been constructed around 14th century by Mindi Kings. Along with this, there are also two other temples in the town of Bhimili. All of these date back to the times of Chola's as Bheemeswaralayam and Choleswaralayam.

How to reach Bheemunipatnam

By Road
There are various buses available to the town from major Indian cities. One of major towns of Andhra Pradesh is situated nearby thereby making travelling to the town easier. The bus service is run by the government known as APSRTC.

By Train
There is no railway station for the town Bheemunipatnam although; the station for Vishakapatnam town is nearby. There are regular trains available to the town of Vishakapatnam.

By Air
The nearest airport to the town is that of Vishakapatnam. There are regular flights available to the airport connecting various major Indian cities to the town.
